Argentina to Alaska

Better map to follow!

On the 24th October 2006, I'll be flying out to Buenos Aires along with Iain and Michelle to start my Pan-American trip.

South America

Once the delights of Buenos Aires have been well and truly sampled, hangovers have subsided and the bikes have arrived, we'll be getting them sorted out for the first leg of the trip down to Tierra del Fuego, the 'Island of Fire'. This is apparently not a gay disco but home to the most southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia.

From there is really a just a case of pointing north and loosely sticking to the west coast. We will follow the Andes through Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador. The main thing is that the route is not set in stone but notable highlights for South America will include:

1. A bit of trekking in Torres Del Paine National Park in Chile

2. The Moreno Glacier in Argentina

3. The Fray Bentos factory in Uruguay (Nope, I didn't know it was there either)

4. Inca ruins at Cusco and Machu Picchu in Peru

5. The Nazca Lines in Peru- I wonder if they'll let me microlight over them?

6. Mountain biking in Bolivia (kidnapping experience not essential)

6. Galapagos Islands from Ecuador (Will see how the budget is doing as apparently pretty expensive but how often will I be here?)

Central America

From Ecuador (or if I'm feeling brave, Colombia), the 'Darien Gap' needs to be crossed to get over to Panama.

It's then on to Central America, consisting of Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico so plenty of border hassles and beurocracy then. And hopefully some good beaches...

North America

I'm pretty sure I'll be looking forward to getting back to an English speaking country by this stage. Having only seen California when I was 11 plus a couple of trips to Canada, I'm fairly sure there will be plenty to keep me occupied during my travels here. Detours permitting, my plan at this stage is to get up to Alaska.
